Why Am I So Single? is a musical with a book, music, and lyrics of Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, based on the love lives, cultural tastes, and charming friendship of Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss.
Autobiographical to the nth degree and wholly aware of its shortcomings in terms of wide appeal and the fact that it’s frankly self obsessed… it somehow manages to be one of the most fun and joyous new musicals on the West End.
For straight to the West End it did go, with the incredible success of Six: The Musical behind them, Marlow and Moss were commissioned to create a new show for the Garrick Theatre.
New talents Leesa Tulley and Jo Foster are our titular characters Lucy Nancy and Jo Oliver, rarely leaving the stage for the 2.5hour runtime and keeping running gag after running gag going between a mega mix of show stoppers that span seemingly all the genres – something the Six creators do very well. The number of the night was hard to identify – there were many – but to note just two: the tap dancing (“C U Never“) special appearance from their good friend Art (Noah Thomas) is a millennial joy, and Foster’s solo, spiralling rock epic “Crystal Ball” is a show stopping stunner.

The show oozes West End quality with a live band on stage led by Six’s Joe Beighton, effortlessly moving from genre to genre. Moi Tran‘s set is minimal, at times, with incredible ensemble cast becoming the set furniture as needed… which might sound a bit A Level drama but somehow felt , well, right.
It might feel at times that this is just a very good show from those annoying Cambridge theatre kids – and that’s just what this is after all. Go see it anyway. Why Am I So Single is a cringe title, but this is a freaking fabulous show.
