Something In The Dirt: Film Review | Not Quite A Cult Classic

When Los Angeles neighbours John and Levi notice that there’s something strange in the neighbourhood, they do what any sane person would do.

They try to cash in on it.

Something In The Dirt, directed by and starring both Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson, is a Sci Fi comedy thriller that leans into the mysteries of the universe, and if you are a believer of the Golden Ratio theory then you’ll find your ears perk up when you are watching.

John and Levi uncover an almost supernatural, possibly even extraterrestrial occurrence, and after a bit of digging realise that a particular symbol reoccurs throughout their LA neighbourhood. The more they dig, the more they find the mysterious symbol appears, even the City of Angels itself seems to be built in its shape.

Moorhead and Benson, whose past credits include the critically acclaimed The EndlessSynchronic and Marvel Studio’s Moon Knight, have approached the film with their DIY style.

Something In The Dirt feels like it goes on just a spell too long as you’ll no doubt find yourself reaching for your phone, or clicking the pause button to see how long you’ve got left.

On paper the plot has all the makings of a cult classic, but unfortunately is severely let down by a next to nothing budget. Combined with uncharismatic characters and script, it certainly won’t be giving the MCU a run for its money.
