Only An Octave Apart: Theatre Review | Cabaret Opera Medley Extravaganza

Following a spectacular run in New York last year, London better be ready for a medley of cabaret and opera at the Wilton’s Music Hall as Only An Octave Apart runs from 22nd September until 28th October.

Directed by Zack Winokur and starring talented duo Justin Vivian Bond and Anthony Roth Costanzo, the 90 minute extravaganza will give you goosebumps, get your feet tapping and is an absolute must for anyone fancying a bit of pizazz.

So, there’s not really a plot. It’s more two incredibly established performers coming together to put on a show for an eager audience. The way that Bond and Costanzo bounce off each other with comedic timing, innuendos and set each other up for the next song was actually just a pleasure to watch.

Costanzo has the voice of an opera toting angel that will leave your eyes absolutely glued to the stage. Bond, on the other hand, has that husky tone that you’d expect to hear in a smoke-filled room cabaret bar, backed by a saxophone somewhere in downtown Manhattan.

The two went through a run of snazzy dresses and costumes as they balladed their way through a range of songs; a contrasting spectrum involving the likes of Mozart, Bowie and Neil Diamond. Just off to the side of the stage played the Orchestra. Directed by piano man Daniel Schlosberg, the musicians were almost as enamouring as Bond and Costanzo.

The stage was stripped back throughout Only An Octave Apart. Starting with a shiny, but heavy blue curtain before being slowly stripped back piece by piece until only the back wall remained, exposing the Wilton’s Music Hall facade. A great way to share and celebrate diversity and empowerment as raw artistic emotion flooded in waves out into the audience.

With no interval, the Only An Octave Apart ran just long enough that you finish your drink and can head on for a night on the tiles. A great way to spend an evening, with the timelessly stunning Wilton’s Music Hall as always, a trip in itself.

If you’re as theatre thirsty as we are, then get a load of what we’ve been up to.
